untitled, by Maya Hendler

image.jpgThis area in a formal enclave made by pleached Waterhousia hedges which create an uncomfortable place to walk through. Maya was inspired by this space to recreate a funnel web spider’s web, varying terms of transparency and opaqueness with some areas being more heavily woven and knotted and others with the string further apart. “Lifting this idea from the earth to the air challenges our perception in a visually playful way”, says Maya.  “Such a structure will inhibit movement through the archway but can be accessed either by small children or by crawling. The strings will move in all directions, creating a series of multidirectional lines attaching to points throughout the arch. The weaving will allow for tunnels of vision to occur at various places through the archway space.”
